Saintly Sketches: Saint Anthony the Great

Yesterday we celebrated the feast of one of my favorite saints. Saint Anthony the Great.
Anthony was one of the first monks and is considered thr father of all monastics. He went out to the desert to try to pray alone, apart from the hustle and bustle of the city. Out in the desert, many demons came to tempt him, sometimes appearing as beautiful women trying to seduce him, or as mighty kings to give him power and riches, or when he had fasted for a long time, they came to him with a great banquet and tried to get him to break his fast and to overeat.
But no matter how the demons besought Anthony, and no matter how they tempted him, he simply walked away. Finally, they became enraged and began to beat Anthony, even slapping him with sticks. Then Jesus appeared and the demons fled. Anthony asked Jesus, "Where were you?" Jesus answered, "I have been here with you all along Anthony, but I wanted to give you a chance to struggle for a time."
Anthony would go on to accomplish great feats, and he kept moving further and further into the desert, because every time he would settle in a place, many men would go out to become monks and learn from Abba Anthony. Let us be inspired by the life of this noble Saint.
